Background of the study
Resource allocation in public hospitals is a fundamental issue that influences the quality and accessibility of healthcare services. In many developing countries, including Nigeria, hospitals face significant challenges in distributing resources equitably and efficiently. Public hospitals, in particular, struggle with limited funding, outdated infrastructure, and inefficiencies in the allocation of medical supplies and human resources (Ameh et al., 2024). Taraba State, located in northeastern Nigeria, is an example of a region where public hospitals often face these challenges. Limited government funding, inadequate planning, and an overreliance on external donations contribute to the inefficient distribution of resources in healthcare institutions (Oladosu & Yusuf, 2023).
A proper analysis of resource allocation in public hospitals is essential for improving the delivery of healthcare services. Inadequate resource allocation can result in stockouts, poor patient care, delayed treatments, and low staff morale (Ogunleye et al., 2025). Effective resource management strategies are essential to optimize the use of available resources and ensure that healthcare institutions can deliver high-quality care despite financial constraints. This study will critically analyze resource allocation in Taraba State’s public hospitals, identifying key issues that need to be addressed to improve healthcare delivery.
Statement of the problem
Public hospitals in Taraba State are faced with chronic challenges in resource allocation, leading to significant inefficiencies in healthcare service delivery. Limited financial resources, poor infrastructure, and inconsistent supply chains are major obstacles that hinder the effective use of available resources (Musa et al., 2024). This problem is exacerbated by the lack of a clear framework for resource allocation, which often results in an unequal distribution of healthcare resources across different departments and facilities within the hospitals. These inefficiencies ultimately affect the quality of care provided to patients and contribute to the overall dysfunctionality of the healthcare system in the state.
Objectives of the study
To critically analyze the current resource allocation practices in public hospitals in Taraba State.
To identify the challenges associated with resource allocation in Taraba State’s public hospitals.
To propose strategies for improving resource allocation in public hospitals in Taraba State.
Research questions
How are resources currently allocated in public hospitals in Taraba State?
What are the major challenges faced in the allocation of resources in Taraba State’s public hospitals?
What strategies can be implemented to improve resource allocation in public hospitals in Taraba State?
Research hypotheses
Ineffective resource allocation practices in public hospitals in Taraba State lead to suboptimal healthcare delivery.
Financial constraints and lack of planning are the major challenges in resource allocation in Taraba State’s public hospitals.
Implementing better resource allocation strategies will significantly improve healthcare service delivery in Taraba State’s public hospitals.
Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on public hospitals in Taraba State, particularly analyzing how resources are allocated and the challenges faced by hospital administrators. The research will be limited to a few selected hospitals, and the findings may not be generalizable to other regions. Data collection will primarily rely on qualitative interviews, which could limit the comprehensiveness of the findings.
